Civil law is a legal system based primarily on written codes governing private relationships between individuals and juristic persons. Thailand follows the civil law tradition, with the Civil and Commercial Code as its main source of private law.

The Thai Civil and Commercial Code is the principal codified source of private law in Thailand. It consists of six Books covering general principles, obligations, specific contracts, property, family law and succession. While Thailand follows the civil law tradition and the Code is the primary source of law, decisions of the Supreme Court play an important role in interpreting and clarifying the meaning and application of its provisions.
